Q1. If I spend $100 at a locally owned store vs. a chain store, what is the difference in impact to my local community?
A1. Results vary, but all studies show that a significant portion of the money spent with a locally owned business stays in the community then if the same money is spent at a chain. While spending the same $100 produced only $43 of local impact.
A study in San Francisco found that for every $1,000,000 in sales, independent create 2.22 local jobs while chain stores create only 1.31.
Studies in mid-coast Maine and Austin, TX showed local economic impacts 3 times greater when buying from locally owned businesses rather than chain stores.
