St. Charles County mails tax bills

The 2009 St. Charles County Personal Property tax bills have been mailed, and Real Estate tax bills should follow within a week to 10 days, said Collector of Revenue Michelle McBride. Drainage and Levee statements will be out shortly thereafter, McBride added.

In all, more than 300,000 bills will be sent out, and residents should look for the mailings with the county logo.

Taxpayers are reminded that property assessments are as of Jan 1, 2009, in accordance with state law. The Projected Tax Liability Notices that were issued in the spring were based on estimated tax rates submitted by the political subdivisions (school districts, fire districts, etc.) so the actual tax bill may be different. The amount of the tax is determined by tax rates, as set by the political subdivisions and voted on by the people, and the assessed value. The collector has no authority over the amount of the tax bill.

Individuals are asked to verify that all information is accurate and complete. Check year, make, and model on vehicles. To request changes to the items listed on a Personal Property tax bill, contact the Assessor’s Office at 636-949-7420.  For address changes, contact the Collector’s Office at 636-949-7470.

All owners of real estate in the county will get a tax statement. If a mortgage company or taxing service has requested the 2009 tax information, it will also be provided to them.  Any landowner who escrows money for taxes still has the responsibility to ensure that taxes are paid.  Late payment penalties and interest apply to all payers.

If you do not receive a tax bill by Dec. 1, 2009, and lived in St. Charles County on Jan 1, 2009, check the county website at HYPERLINK "http://www.sccmo.org"sccmo.org to see if a bill exists for you or call the Collector’s Office.  Failure to receive a bill does not relieve the taxpayer of any tax liability imposed by state law (Section 52.240 RSMo.)

Payments can be put in the drop box in front of the County Administration Building at 201 North Second Street in St. Charles, made in person at the collector’s windows inside the County Administration Building, or paid online or over the phone by credit or debit card or by electronic (e-check).   Anyone wishing to pay by credit card can do so on the Internet at HYPERLINK "http://www.sccmo.org"sccmo.org or by telephone via 1-800-2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829).  The St. Charles County jurisdiction code is 3513.

To prevent late payment penalties and interest, 2009 bills must be paid or postmarked on or before Dec 31, 2009.  The Collector’s Office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The office does not close for lunch.
