Ballwin Board of Aldermen unanimously approves Schnucks proposal
Hundreds of people once again packed The Pointe at Ballwin Commons on June 22 to voice their opinions regarding the proposed Schnucks at the corner of Kehrs Mill and Clarkson Roads.
Approximately the same amount had been in attendance at a Ballwin Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on May 27.
The Planning and Zoning Commission had rejected approval of the plan. However, the Board of Aldermen still had the option to approval the proposal with a super-majority vote.
For more than an hour on June 22, many voiced their opposition to or support of the development.
“My property backs right up to the proposed development,” resident Christine Cuybalsky said. “I matter and I pay Ballwin taxes. No one has come to me and told me that my house will be protected. Your slogan is ‘Bringing People Together’. You need to follow that and know that this is not needed in the community.”
Dave Davis said he was for the proposed construction because he felt Schnucks officials had done their research and addressed the residents’ concerns.
“I am a 16-year resident of Ballwin and I support the proposal because I feel Schnucks is a good, hard-working citizen,” Davis said. “Ballwin needs the tax revenue and I hope construction can begin as soon as possible.”
The board voted 10-0 to pass the bill authorizing the rezoning of the land to commercial so the Schnucks plan can move forward.
After the vote, numerous residents were outraged screaming, “How can you live with yourselves” and “I’m sure Schnucks is lining the pockets of the aldermen as we leave,” as the crowd left the Pointe.
