Chesterfield Police suffer loss of respected officer

The Chesterfield Police Department announced the loss of Officer Joseph Smith. On March 13 at approximately 10:05 p.m., Officer Smith succumbed to a medical emergency believed to be a heart attack, shortly after completing his shift.
Officer Smith, who was 50 years of age, was in his 31st year of law enforcement and served with several area departments, including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and was detached for 10 years to the St. Louis County Police Drug Unit. The past 17 years, he served with distinction on the Chesterfield Police Department. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons. Officer Smith was a decorated officer including a recipient of the Crusade Against Crime Medal of Valor for saving the life of a citizen in 1994 and the United States Attorney’s Office Distinguished Service award for his work in narcotics interdiction.
Funeral arrangements will be provided once they become available.
