Junior guard Asa Toney was a unanimous selection to the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball first team as announced today by the GLVC. Sophomore guard Armon Provo was named second-team All-Conference, and senior forward Gerald Shaw earned All-Defensive team honors.
Toney leads the team with 14.7 ppg and 58 steals and is second in the league with 131 assists. He is tied for the squad lead with 4.4 rpg and has converted 53 3-pointers on the year while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from 3-point range. Toney was one of just three to earn unanimous selection to the first team.
Provo is second on the squad with a 12.2 scoring average, 83 assists and 47 steals. He reached double-figures in scoring 15 times and set a school record by hitting all 11 field goal attempts, including 7-for-7 from 3-point range, in a 31-point explosion at Missouri S&T.
Shaw averages 10.5 ppg to go along with 52 assists, 15 steals and 13 blocked shots. Bolstered by Shaw’s defense on the wing, the Saints are second in the GLVC and 20th in the nation in scoring defense at 61.7 points per game.
The Saints set a school record for wins in a season and are 23-8 overall, 12-6 in the GLVC. Maryville earned a first-round bye in the 2013 Deaconess GLVC Tournament and begins play as the No. 4 seed against No. 5 seed Bellarmine at noon Thursday (March 7) at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
