Wentzville students excel at Regional Science and Engineering Fair

Students from the Wentzville School District competed in Missouri’s Tri-County Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at St. Charles Community College on Saturday Feb. 23. This year there were more than 480 entries which included 142 by Wentzville students and 10 WSD classroom projects. At the end of the day, 43 Wentzville students and three WSD classrooms received awards, including 22 first and second place awards.
Holt High School senior Savannah Est received an overall First Place in the High School Honors Division for her project “Circadian and Photomorphogenic Responses in Arabidopsis Thaliana” and will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Ariz. on May 12 through May 17. Est was also the recipient of the Army, Navy and Air Force Research Awards for her project. Additional recognition went to the following students:
HoltHigh School:
Junior Kayla Calvillo – Second Place overall in the Honors Division (she will also attend the International Science and Engineering Fair as an observer), Yale Science and Engineering Award, American Society for Materials Engineering Award, Army, Navy, and Air Force Research awards
Junior Hunter Park – Third Place overall in the Honors Division (he will compete at the ISWEEP in Houston, Texas in May), Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Award, and the Army, Navy and Air Force Research awards
Seniors Kaitlin Bishop and Jordan Holtswarth – Fourth place overall in the Honors Division, Army and Air Force Research Awards
Junior Lance Novak – Fifth place overall in the Honors Division, National Society for Professional Engineers Award
Junior John Vikman – First Place American Chemical Society Award, US Public Health Award
Senior Bryan Love – Second Place American Chemical Society Award
Junior Cindy Gaines – Society for In Vitro Biology Award
Junior Allison Hellebusch – US Metric Association Award
