The high school basketball season is under way and looks to be a good one again with several teams showing the ability to go deep in the postseason. While that is a way off, there will be some changes as the Missouri State High School Activities Association changed the districts somewhat this year. The goal was to make them a little more geographical friendly.

CBC coach Bob McCormack said that was one of the MSHAA’s main goals.

“The districts are more geographical,” McCormack said. “I think that was what they were shooting for.”

Still, he could quibble a bit if he wanted. The Class 5 District 4 is loaded. Along with CBC, there is De Smet, Parkway Central, Parkway West, Parkway North and Pattonville.

“That’s one heck of a district,” McCormack said.  “It’s one of those deals it makes sense for De Smet to be in there. They’re the closest school to us. It’s one of those teams you have to be ready to play. It’s at Parkway Central. With (coach) Rick Kirby back in the mix there at Central, he’ll have them ready to play.

“Regardless, they switch it up every two years. The state does a good job. You got to play them no matter where it is. If you want to go to state, you’ve got to play some very good teams along the way.”

CBC won its district last year as did Parkway North. Now, they can slug it out in the same district this winter.

Parkway South boys coach Mitch Stevens said he has no quarrels with the teams in District 3.

“The district is pretty much the same minus Parkway West,” Stevens said. “It should be very competitive with anybody and everybody having a chance to win a district championship.”

Marquette is also in District 3 and coach Shane Matzen said the lineup is OK with him.

“Our district is fine. I have no issues,” Matzen said. “Even if I had reason to be upset, there would be no reason to hash it out. You have to play the teams on your schedule. Complaining is a waste of time.”

The MSHAA does it job well, Matzen said.

“I’m a big advocate of MSHSAA and the folks who work in their offices,” Matzen said. “It’s a bigger job than people realize. What most people who complain about them don’t understand is that MSHSAA is us — the schools that make it up. We govern ourselves.

“The people who are in the offices at Columbia are the facilitators of the policies that we, as members, support and pass.”

On the girls side, one of the biggest changes comes with St. Joseph’s Academy and Incarnate Word Academy being in different classes. Incarnate Word has dropped to Class 4 because it’s enrollment has gone down. While the two schools remain in the same conference, neither will be around to possibly knock each out in the postseason.

“It’s going to a lot different without Incarnate in there,” St. Joseph’s coach Julie Matheny said. “That’s how it goes. We’re still in a good district.”
