Defending Class 4 state champion Lafayette has to get past St. Joseph’s Academy if the Lancers want to stay alive in high school girls volleyball postseason play.
The two volleyball powerhouses will play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 27) at Layfette in a sectional game.

The St. Joseph’s Academy Angels are 30-4 this season while Lafayette is a spotless 34-0.  Lafayette has yet to lose a set this season.

The two teams met in the season opener. Lafayette scored a 25-17, 25-22 victory.

The Lancers defeated Eureka 25-4, 25-10 to win the District 3 tournament champiopnship.  St. Joseph’s swept Metro Women’s Athletic Association White Division foe Ursuline 25-22, 25-16 to win the District 4 crown.

The winner of the sectional game will face the winner of the contest between Farmington (19-12) and Lindbergh (19-7-6). That quarterfinal contest will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

In another Class 4 sectional game Saturday, finds Francis Howell (29-5) playing at Marquette (29-6) at 4:30 p.m.

The Mustangs won the District 7 championship match by getting past Parkway West 25-21, 25-20. The Longhorns finished with an 11-19-2 record. In the semifinals,

Marquette defeated Parkway North 25-18, 25-11. The Vikings wound up 22-9.

Hazelwood Central meets the Incarnate Word Academy Red Knights (16-12) in a 3 p.m. match  at Marquette.  The Red Knights won the District 5 crown with a 25-14, 25-17 victory over Rosati-Kain.

The winner of Hazelwood Central-Incarnate Word Academy match will meet the winner of Francis Howell and Marquette in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

In Class 3 sectional play, Duchesne plays Westminster Christian (24-6) at St. Dominic. The match has a 3 p.m. start.

Westminster won the Class 3 district tournament title by beating defending state champion 15-25, 25-17, 25-22.
It was the Wildcats’ second district championship in three seasons.
