The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is endorsing Todd Akin for U.S. Senate in Missouri.
“Todd Akin has a proven record of defending the Second Amendment,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of NRA-PVF. “His strong dedication and voting record have earned him an ‘A’ rating and endorsement from the NRA-PVF.”
While serving in Congress, Todd Akin signed the historic briefs filed before the U.S. Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago, which argued that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental, individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms for all law-abiding Americans. Akin cosponsored and voted for H.R. 822, “The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act,” which would ensure that law-abiding Americans with valid concealed handgun permits would be able to carry a concealed handgun in any other state that does not prohibit concealed carry. He also voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas related to the deadly Operation Fast and Furious scandal, and voted for an amendment to prevent the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from circumventing the will of Congress by centralizing records of thousands of Americans’ long gun purchases.
Akin voted for H.R. 4089, “The Sportsmen’s Heritage Act,” which would promote America’s hunting heritage and positively impact sportsmen throughout the country. He cosponsored and voted for the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act,” which protected American gun makers from being sued into bankruptcy, and he cosponsored and voted for the “Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act” and voted to prohibit gun confiscation during states of emergency. In addition, Akin voted for an amendment to repeal the D.C. gun ban/registration statute and restore the right of self-defense to law-abiding residents of our nation’s capital.

I have been a life member of the NRA, for several years but seeing that they endorse someone who is so misinformed that he thinks that there is a difference between Rape and “Legitimate Rape” as Akin put it, makes me worry. I want politicians that support my 2nd amendment rights, but I don’t want a moron as a representative either. I get the feeling the NRA would even support entities like the Westborough Baptist Church or even terrorist groups like Hamas if they came out in support of an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. If this is who the NRA thinks is a good choice for office maybe I don’t want to be a member anymore.
I also am an NRA life member for the past 35 years and I oppose the endorsement of Todd Akin based solely on the one issue of individual gun rights. I know that the NRA focus is on protecting the indiviual right to bear arms and that Mr. Akin has been a strong supporter. However his views on other subjects should be taken into account before indorsing him. I intend to let the NRA know that this indorsement does not meet my approval.
