To the Editor:

To those who have stopped supporting Todd Akin because of the rape comments, I urge you to reconsider.

Todd Akin repeated some bad medical information from the 70s and 80s and his use of the word legitimate to distinguish from statutory rape was a bad choice. He has realized his mistake and has sincerely apologized. He is still the same honorable, conservative man you admired and supported before. Nothing in that regard has changed. He does not deserve to be cut of at the knees for a gaffe like this when Uncle Joe Biden makes 27 of them a week and no one is calling for his removal. And he’s one heartbeat from the presidency.

Todd Akin’s goal and ours, before this incident, was to defeat Claire McCaskill and gain a conservative majority in the Senate. If your desire to punish Akin is greater than your desire to win the Senate seat, then your spite will hurt the conservative cause. Put aside your grievance and help Todd Akin win in November.
