Maglione

CBC senior Alec Maglione, who medaled at the recent state wrestling tournament, was named to the 2011-2012 Academic All-State Wrestling Team by the Missouri Wrestling Association.

Maglione was recognized at the association’s recent awards banquet held at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Mo. Award recipients must have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have placed as a top 6 medalist at the 2012 Missouri State Wrestling Tournament.

Maglione finished his final season with a 48-8 record. Maglione captured the Class 4 District championship at 138 pounds. Maglione earned a sixth-place medal at the state tournament while carrying a 4.6 GPA.

CBC coach Rocky Strieb called Maglione a good example of a student-athlete.

“He’s an incredible student,” Strieb said. “Alec is carrying a 4.6 GPA with a high load of AP courses.”

At state, Maglione did well. He opened by beating Lee’s Summit’s Jesse Morris with a convincing 7-0 decision. He followed that with a 7-5 decision to Nixa’s Marshall Phelan. In the wrestlebacks, he beat Fran Behr 3-2. Maglione followed that with a win over Rens Park 11-9 in overtime. He lost 6-0 to Lafayette’s Nick Olejnik. He lost the fifth-place match 2-1 in two overtimes to Chad Homan, of Lee’s Summit.

“He did quite well at state,” Strieb said. “He pulled out some really close matches. This is the first medal for him this year. He won 50 matches and four tournaments this year.”

Strieb said it is not likely Maglione will wrestle in college.

“His focus will be on academics,” Strieb said. “However, he isn’t opposed to competing again; it just depends on the opportunities that come his way.

“He’ll be sorely missed. He is a real leader. He was my first CBC ‘project’ that I could not possibly be happier with.”
