Whitfield dominates Class 1, District 1 wrestling tournament

Winning a district wrestling championship is getting to be old hat for Whitfield.
The Warriors dominated the Class 1 District 1 it hosted and seven Whitfield matmen won their weight class and 12 total grapplers earned a ticket to the state meet. It was the 11th district title in 12 seasons for the Warriors.
Here are the team scores: Whitfield 259.5, St. James 195.5, Herculaneum 176, Brentwood 101, Principia 89.5, New Madrid County Central 78.5, Fatima 65.5, Maplewood-Richmond Heights 58, Lutheran St. Charles 57, Cleveland 26, Lift For Life 20, Springfield Catholic 12, Barat 0, Missouri School For The Blind 0, Northwest Academy 0.
The top four in each weight class qualify for the state tournament, that begins Thursday at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia. Here are the state qualifiers:
At 106. Whitfield’s Saad Raza finished third with a 12-7 decision over Lucas Jones, of Brentwood.
At 113, Principia’s Zeya Kyaw finished second, losing 8-5 to Jonas Tiggs, of Maplewood-Richmond Heights. In the third-place match, Jesse O’Dell, of Herculaneum, pinned Ben Asyre, of Whitfield, in 4 minutes, 18 seconds.
At 126, Chris Wilkes, of Whitfield, pinned Nicholas DeClue, of St. James, in 2:53. Wilkes improved to 45-1 on the season. In the third-place match, Matt Ross, of Principia, whipped Matt Stiefermann, of Fatima, 12-2.
At 132, Whitfield Austin Smith pinned Luke DeOrnellis, of Fatima, in 1:50. In the third-place match, Daniel Davis, of St. James, beat Pincipia’s Gabe Stringer 13-2.
At 138, Whitfield’s Lawrence Becker took third when he pinned Eric Vogeli, of Brentwood, in 40 seconds.
At 145, Whitfield’s Rodney Hahn scored a medical forfeit over Jason Walls, of St. James. Hahn improved his season record to 42-3.
At 152, Whitfield’s William Hahn pinned Payton Woolsey, of St. James, in 55 seconds. He improves to 46-5 on the season.
At 160, Billy Duncan, Herculaneum defeated Pat McLaughlin, of Whitfield, 10-1.
At 170, Andrew McLaughlin, of Whitfield, pinned Tyler Jones, of Brentwood, at 2:36 to win the class. In the third-place match, Nicholas Brown, of Herculaneum, topped Shane Reisen, of Principia, 12-5.
At 182, Ethan Sherertz, of Whitfield, pinned Austin Cummins, of New Madrid County Central, in 2:48. Scherertz improved to 38-3.
At 195, Michael Shearburn, of Whitfield, pinned Jacob Wilshusen, of Lutheran St. Charles, in 25 seconds to win third place.
At 220, Whitfield’s Stephen Scobee topped Kevin Jernigan, of St. James, 8-3 to win. In the third-place match, Garrett Moulton, of Principia, beat Tyler Partney, of Herculaneum, 9-1.
